“RG” Rebuilt Gearboxes: Did you know?
Cotta has been around for well over a century and that means we still have customers with gearboxes from the early to mid-1900’s. Here at Cotta, we always offer the option to repair or rebuild your old gearbox, if that meets the requirement. First step in the process is to run a few very thorough analyses to determine if a rebuild is feasible. Then our team of engineers will organize a repair method to make your gearbox operate like new again. Cotta takes pride in our ability to analyze and rebuild old gearboxes back to new.
Top Mast Gearboxes: Did you know?
Cotta LLC has been designing and manufacturing custom design gearboxes for over fifty years. Cotta works with each of our customers to understand their specific needs and then designs the best possible product to overcome the challenges that the application presents.
One example of a custom gearbox is our top mast gearbox. This style gearbox is sold into many different markets. The primary markets that use this gearbox are mining and water well. The gearbox is used specifically for drilling applications. Cotta and our drilling customers have worked together to provide a solution that meets their unique requirements for pushing down or pulling up on the drill. The greater down force gives the user the ability to drill holes faster thus increasing their productivity.
Over the last 30 years Cotta’s custom top mast drive has proven to be a durable and reliable product. We have thousands of top mast gearboxes being used by end users throughout the world. Our gearboxes can be found in drilling equipment throughout the United States, South America, Europe, Russia and Australia. Since its humble beginnings more than 100 years ago, Cotta has continued its focus on quality customized gearboxes that solve real-world transmission challenges. Today, Cotta’s gearboxes can be found in helicopters, trucks, custom chassis, well drilling, and specialty truck applications.
Hard Turning: Did you know?
Cotta has increased the use of hard turning, as an alternative to precision grinding, for achieving dimensional tolerances and surface finishes, faster. Hard turning is very efficient for cylindrical shaped parts such as gears, shafts, and pinions. While precision grinding provides the ability to achieve higher dimensional tolerances, we can often reduce setup and machining time through hard turning. This process can also be more environmentally friendly because the metal chips leftover from hard turning can be recycled, versus the disposal involved with the swarf generated by grinding. Cotta takes great pride in our manufacturing, and this process improvement isn’t too “Hard”.
Gearbox Large Milling: Did you know?
Cotta has one of the only large Miltronics boring bars with a Fanuc control. We often utilize this machine to manufacture large cases and covers for our industrial gearboxes. This specific Miltronics is equipped with a quill otherwise called a W axis, which allows us to hold extremely tight tolerances. The quill also allows us to line-bore our case / cover assemblies with great precision once they are built. Cotta takes great pride in our manufacturing capabilities, and this is a “Big” one.
Gearbox Performance Testing: Did you know?
Gearbox performance is crucial to Cotta and that’s why every unit built is tested and monitored in our state-of-the-art testing lab. High-speed gearboxes are especially scrutinized for bearing temperatures and other criteria to ensure our customer receives a quality Cotta product. Cotta speed increasers have been successfully tested with output speeds reaching 80,000 RPM.
Gearbox Upgrade Capabilities: Did you know?
Cotta recently had an OEM reach out to us to see if we could work with them to upgrade their gearboxes that they purchased from us. The gearbox is a model J967 Right-Angle, used in a concrete/asphalt grinding application. Cotta engineers worked with this OEM to understand the changes they were looking to make. Then, they sent several gearboxes back to us for evaluation and upgrade. Cotta not only designs new gearboxes, but we can repair, rebuild, and upgrade a customer’s existing gearbox back to either original or upgrade requirements. We also offer reman gearboxes for certain models as well.
High-Speed Gearboxes: Did you know?
A major Cotta product line is our high-speed, high-power gearboxes used in numerous types of R & D and production test stand applications. Primary industries where our high-speed gearboxes are used are the commercial and military aerospace market and the automotive market. Typical applications of the type of products being evaluated are generators and hydraulic pumps. We offer a wide range of ratings for our gearboxes. Nominal power ratings start at 100 horsepower and go up to 5,700 horsepower. The output speed range starts at 6,000 RPM and goes up to 85,000 RPM. When you need higher ratings, most models can be customized or modified to meet your exact design requirements. Our gearboxes are designed to last and offer unsurpassed reliability to our customers, several of whom have had Cotta gearboxes in use for over 40 years!
